Columbia Heights West

HISTORY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS WEST NEIGHBORHOOD
The Columbia Heights west land has been acquired since 1724, and was owned by Stephen Gray. He received the land through a grant from Lord Fairfax. The neighborhood boundaries lay across, what is known today as, S. 7th Rd. (north), Columbia Pike (south), S. Arlington Mill Drive (east), and S. Carlin Springs Rd. (west). The earliest known property in this neighborhood was the Glencarlyn Park, developed in 1887. This was named after the landowner, Carlyn. Around this time there was only a few landowners in the area. Most properties were most likely farms.

This neighborhood was preparing for future development during the early 1800s. The earliest recreational facility was Arlington Mill, which was established in 1836, located on Four Mile Run. (Today it has been removed from this area and moved on to the Ballston area) The earliest road was known as Armstrong’s Road, which is now S. Dinwiddie St. Pretty much the only thing that lied around the neighborhood was tracts. In 1952 was when the most change occurred. The population and housing increased due to World War II. Two large apartment complexes were built in 1947, Magnolia Gardens and Park Glen. After this, many more were built. There was Columbia Gardens, Columbia Heights Apartments, Greenbrier Apartments, and Tyrol Hill Apartments, which are recognizable today. Along with the housing, the number of streets had increased as well. Construction had continued in Columbia Heights West. By 1964, 94% of the housing had been built.

Columbia Heights West has natural areas and community facilities. There is the greenbelt with picnic areas, fishing, biking, and hiking trails. The most popular in this neighborhood would have to be Tyrol Hills Park, with picnic tables, playground, and a basketball court. Community facilities include the Glencarlyn Elementary School, two Bilingual Outreach Centers, Greenbrier Learning Center and Church, and the new Arlington Mills Community Center. A Bilingual Center is located in Harvey Hall and Magnolia Commons apartment complexes. Overall this neighborhood is known for its culturally and ethnically diversity. Columbia Heights West has been transformed from farmland dotted with a few scattered houses to an established neighborhood, with commercial and recreational opportunities, and characterized by diverse housing options and an increasingly diverse population.
