Clarendon History By Erin Daniell

Clarendon is an area in the central part of Arlington and consists of the area surrounding the Clarendon metro.

After Arlington County became a county Clarendon slowly became its downtown. The Neighborhood had several department stores and the county’s first post office. This Post office is now considered a historic land mark (seen below.) The building is a great example of New Deal architecture. This post office was named after Joseph L. Fisher, a representative in congress. In the mid 1970s Clarendon neighborhood became home to a large population of Vietnamese. Then Clarendon was even nicknamed “Little Saigon” because it had several Vietnamese shops and restaurants within the neighborhood borders.
When the metro was built in the early 1980s, it led to several major changes. This includes the gentrification of neighborhood. All the old shops were moved out while big chain stores moved in. Much of the “little Saigon” is gone with only one remaining Vietnamese restaurant left.
Clarendon today is still an urban center for Arlington County. It is home to many trendy bar and restaurants, and the night life is very city like. Clarendon holds several parades every year and has the largest amateur and professional bike race in the country.
