General Arlington History

In 1801 Washington DC was split across the Potomac and Alexandria County was formed to the east of the Potomac. For political reasons Alexandria returned to Virginia in 1847 and changed its name to Arlington County in 1920 to avoid confusion with the town of Alexandria.

Arlington County’s name comes from Arlington National Cemetery in the backyard of Robert E Lee’s House withing Arlington County.

Arlington contains important sites and monuments such as Arlington National Cemetery, The Pentagon, Fort Myer, The Air Force Memorial, and the Marine Corps Memorial.
