Cherrydale Then and Now

The bottom photo is a picture of the General Store that was built in 1906. This store was the central part of the community. Most everything surrounded it providing convenience to the community. This General Store has become Safeway.

The Cherrydale Elementary School was built in 1917 at the corner of Nelson Street and Lee Highway. The school had rooms, 19 teachers, and 362 students. The school had the first hot lunch program in Arlington County. The school was a place that held many Cherrydale gatherings such as dinners, movies, dances, and holiday events. The school was closed in 1969 and torn down in 1973 in preparation for the Camelot Nursing Home. The Nursing Home has 240 beds and a staff of 190 people. The Nursing Home offers long term care to ill people.
