Cherrydale is a neighborhood in northern Arlington, Virginia. It is centered on the intersection known as the five points consisting of Quincy Street, Military Road, and Old Dominion Road. Cherrydale is predominantly a single family housing neighborhood that is neatly kept and relatively small. The neighborhood still retains its small town feeling by having quiet streets and huge old trees even though it is only three and half miles from Washington, D.C. There is such a hometown feeling in the area that is shown in the pride the residents have in the community heritage and saving homes that are of importance in our history.
In 1839, a branch post office at Lee Highway and Pollard Street was named Cherrydale with reference to Dorsey Donaldson’s large cherry orchard in the back of the present Cherrydale firehouse. Settlement in this area began after the Civil War and was stimulated by the establishment of The Old Dominion Railway Line. This commuter railroad establishment in 1906 initiated a period of rapid residential and commercial development. Then for the next fifty years large tracts of land in Cherrydale both north and south of Lee Highway were subdivided into a series of residential developments of varying sizes.
Present day Cherrydale has a total population of 3,283 people. The population has grown from the 3,161 people living there in 1990. Of the current population 79.3% of the population is white, 7.3% of the population is Asian of other Pacific Islander, 7.1% is Hispanic or Latino, and 3.9% is African American. Households are predominantly average families with 2 parents and children with 52.9% of the population being this way. Then 23.1% of households are married couples without children.
In Cherrydale during the 1800’s the civil war had a major impact on the area. Also, there was change to the wilderness as more farmers acquired and cleared land for cultivation. During the Civil War no wars were fought in Cherrydale the Union Troops camped and maneuvered in Cherrydale and several roads were constructed. For example the main road Military road was constructed. Military Road was built in three days to connect several fortifications with Chain Bridge. After the war was over many soldiers decided to remain in the area as farmers. The location of Cherrydale is ideal because there is easy access to the Washington and Georgetown markets, which was ideal for fruit orchards and truck farms.
Cherrydale has a population of 3,625 people. The ratio of male to female is 0.99:1. The percent of married people in this area is 49.8% and the percent of children that people have is 48%. The median household in Cherrydale is $135,776. The median home value is $724,620. In Cherrydale the percent of people that completed high school is 91.2%.
The first graph above shows that the majority of the population in Cherrydale is White. This could have stemmed from the Civil War and the fact that this area was a place for a lot of the Union Soldiers. In the other graph it shows that there is a pretty even ratio of women to men. Also, a majority of the population is in their thirties and forties. The future of Cherrydale is looking pretty inconsistent considering the number of residents is not increasing or decreasing at a certain rate right now, as shown in the graph.
